CHURCH NEWS

From the October 1993 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The Office of the Clerk is receiving many inquiries from church members regarding inspirational meetings planned by Christian Scientists in the Field. Questions have arisen as to whether these meetings have the direct or indirect support of The Mother Church. Mary Baker Eddy's Manual of The Mother Church contains a number of By-Laws relevant to this subject, including Article XXIII, Sections 1, 3, and 10, and Article XIII, Section 3.

The Field meetings dedicated to our Leader's book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures were called for by the Clerk under Article XIII, Section 3, and sponsored by the Office of the Publisher of the Writings of Mary Baker Eddy. The central purpose of these meetings has been to invite deeper individual study of and appreciation for the textbook. Church members have also been encouraged to consider the value of Science and Health to their communities and to explore ways of making the book more available to receptive hearts.

The Publisher of the Writings of Mary Baker Eddy along with the Clerk is now encouraging branch churches to hold their own individual meetings to consider the ongoing mission of Science and Health within their church and community. To support this effort, much material has been printed in recent issues of the Journal and a new video for branch church use has been prepared. (Further information about this video will appear soon in the Christian Science Sentinel and in next month's Journal). The Clerk's Office looks forward to reports from churches that hold such meetings.
