Christ's coming

From the December 1993 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Imagine the wonder of the wise men when they saw the babe Jesus—the human manifestation of the Son of God, or Christ. "When they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh." Matt. 2:11.

The coming of Christ—God's saving message of Truth and Love—is still a wonder. It provides humanity with concrete evidence of the divine Science of being, revealing God as the creator of man and man as God's spiritual likeness.

Christ comes to human understanding only through spiritual sense. But when, in any given case of need, Christ is received in individual human consciousness and lovingly surrendered and conformed to, man's spiritual individuality is made manifest in ways that are clearly visible to everyone. The Discoverer of the Science of Christ, Mrs. Eddy, gives in Science and Health this Biblically derived metaphysical interpretation of the meaning of the term Christ. "The divine manifestation of God, which comes to the flesh to destroy incarnate error." Science and Health, p. 583. "Incarnate error" is error of thought made apparent in the flesh. When Christ supplants erroneous material belief in human consciousness, spiritual truth is made manifest in the flesh in healing. This proves man to be the reflection of God. Because Jesus so fully represented Christ's coming to the flesh, he is called Jesus the Christ, or Christ Jesus.
