As a child growing up in a Christian Scientist family, I had many healings through the prayers of my parents and my own innocent understanding of the truth. Contagious diseases, severe cuts, and in one case a severed finger, were all healed through reliance on God alone. And as I grew I learned that Christian Science can be applied to more than just physical ailments.
When one leaves home for summer camp, boarding school, college, or even a business trip, the first few days are often great. But sometimes you start longing to be with family and friends back home. I had a healing of something people dread —homesickness.
While traveling on a nine-week business recruiting trip, I became terribly homesick and started having a difficult time focusing on my work. As I was lying in bed one evening, I knew that this terrible longing for friends and family had to be quieted. I turned to the description of Jerusalem in the Glossary of Science and Health, recalling that it included something about home. It reads: "Mortal belief and knowledge obtained from the five corporeal senses; the pride of power and the power of pride; sensuality; envy; oppression; tyranny. Home, heaven" (p. 589).
