Notes from Romania

From the November 1994 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Although the following account was written some time ago, we felt the information would still be valuable and inspiring to our readers. Mrs. Linning is a Clerk's Representative for The Mother Church. These church members are called on by the Clerk to be in touch with fellow members and new students of Christian Science living in countries other than the United States. They help to answer general questions about Christian Science and The Mother Church and to give the Office of the Clerk an important perspective on the needs of the Church's members and friends around the world. This is the third report to be published in the Journal about activities in Romania.

This is a report on my fourth trip to Romania, a country which is struggling to find political and economic stability.

Since my last trip in April 1992, the picture, at least in the city of Bucharest, has changed to a brighter, more colorful one. More private shops have opened; more firms from Western Europe have started businesses in town. However, many young people look for work with little hope of finding employment. The prices have gone up dramatically, inflation is high, and people are still lining up for sugar, butter, and milk. People despair over the constant price increases for food, gas and electricity. Even among young people it is hard to find optimism for improvements— economically and also in terms of having a more liberal, honest government. This country needs our prayerful support and love.
