The relevance of church today

From the November 1994 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A few years ago, church members in many areas of the world held Regional Youth Meetings. Here are some excerpts from a talk given at the Youth Meeting in Southern California and some personal observations by the speaker.

Athough I was raised in Christian Science, I did not begin a sincere study of it until my senior year in college (about five years ago). Since that time, my study has been driven by a desire to know the relevance of a relationship to God in today's society, both for myself and my community. With the magnitude of the challenges facing our world today, a passive faith seemed somewhat pointless. Relevance was a must.

Not surprisingly, my search for the relevance of church often focused on the younger members of our community. I have experienced firsthand some of the complex issues facing young people today. I can say without hesitation that my study of and reliance on God have delivered me from many frightening experiences. Many times I found myself trying to dig out of what seemed to be a bottomless pit of confusion and despair. But in my struggle to understand God's relevance in resolving these situations, I found that there was in actuality no "digging" to be done. God had kept me elevated in being and in purity all along. All I had to do was understand why this was true. It was my opportunity to share this enlightenment with others that I wish to tell you about.
