When my husband of many...

From the October 1995 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When my husband of many years passed on several years ago, I had to regain my poise and find new direction. The requirement kept appearing for me "to know what to do with the rest of my life."

So as not to grieve, I went to a favorite sentence in Science and Health: "The divine understanding reigns, is all, and there is no other consciousness" (p. 536). I held to the understanding that weariness and sorrow could not, as they would try to, keep recurring as waves washing over me, and that my own spiritual understanding, by reflection of God, could replace unwanted feelings with the truths of His constant, loving presence with each of us. Through spiritual sense I grew within my heart and mind to accept and adjust humbly, even willingly, to the new demands. I found the pamphlet "God's Law of Adjustment" by Adam H. Dickey among my things, and reread it with deep appreciation.

Then much spiritual impulsion transformed my thought and actions. I knew everything was all right! I recalled and looked up this statement: "Remember, thou canst be brought into no condition, be it ever so severe, where Love has not been before thee and where its tender lesson is not awaiting thee. Therefore despair not nor murmur, for that which seeketh to save, to heal, and to deliver, will guide thee, if thou seekest this guidance" (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany by Mrs. Eddy, pp. 149-150).
