A church service in St. Petersburg, Russia: an unforgettable experience

From the September 1995 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The writer of the following letter lives in Texas but travels extensively. Recently, he visited a church service conducted by the Christian Science group in St. Petersburg, Russia. He recorded his thoughts about that service in a letter to The Mother Church.

I was struck by the intensity of the group —the hungering, thirsting for truth as it thunders through their veins. There was such a surge of power present during the service as they listened to the Lesson-Sermon. In the Christian Science Quarterly And above all, there was a peace, a peace that could come only from the knowledge that here—right here in this dimly lighted small room—was the end of their search. Truth pervaded the atmosphere. All they had to do was grab hold of it. And grab they did!

There was no anxiety, no gloom, no despair, no sorrow. Just love. Here were smiles, based upon the rock—on Truth. [The people attending the service exhibited] a beauty from within as I have never seen it, and it made an impression that will remain with me always.
