Awakening to the purpose of The Christian Science Monitor

From the September 1995 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I had never been much of a newspaper reader. I would watch some news on television and hear bits and pieces on the radio, and that was about it. When I was introduced to Christian Science and began attending church, I found that The First Church of Christ, Scientist, published its own newspaper called The Christian Science Monitor. I wasn't sure just how that fitted in. In every issue there was a religious article, which I found very helpful, but why a newspaper?

As I began to grow spiritually, I understood that it was my Christian duty to be informed about world situations for the purpose of helping to heal them. I learned that all the beautiful truths of God and man that I was cherishing in my study of Christian Science had to be put on the front line for demonstration, not only in my personal affairs but in unselfed love for all mankind.

With much gratitude I began to welcome this paper into my home, appreciating its Christian basis and thorough reporting of the current issues. What a privilege to join in the unselfed love of its founder, Mary Baker Eddy, and to do my part in responding to what I read with healing prayer.
