Branch church work —never dull

From the September 1995 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Never a dull moment!" is a phrase that some of us might be tempted to associate with anything but church work! Yet in the beginning of Science and Health, Mary Baker Eddy quotes Shakespeare's words "There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so." Science and Health, epigraph page Have you ever thought of applying this idea to church duties? It can work wonders.

I recall an experience I had when I was not yet a member of a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. I joined the Christian Science organization at my former university, as a graduate member. These meetings were friendly, lively, and a little less formal than church meetings.

On one occasion, however, I was invited to attend a committee meeting at a local branch church. A friend familiar with both our regular Christian Science organization meetings and the branch church committee meetings frankly forewarned me not to expect the same kind of light-hearted atmosphere. Initially, I appreciated the warning so that I could prepare myself to slip into a more somber mood for the occasion.
