When things go wrong and cares are pressing us down, we sometimes feel overshadowed by fear, and it looks as if we are helpless. Often our self-based thinking makes us inert and apparently unreceptive to God's love. How, then, do we approach such situations? We need to pray in order to bring our thinking into line with the law of God, good. I recall an experience I had, a situation that proved to me the great value of aligning thought with God's law.
After retirement from government service in India, I was working in a hotel as assistant manager. One day while proceeding to the city by scooter, I met with an accident, falling into a ditch next to the road. I received a heavy blow to my head, with a deep cut on my right cheek and slight injuries on my body. I was taken to a nursing home, where the doctor declared that my case was serious and that hospitalized treatment was a must. While refusing medical treatment, I also expressed my desire to be taken care of through prayer, at home. Because I insisted on this, the doctor gave me permission. Family members took me home.
I knew my staying away from my job without a substitute would cause inconvenience to my employer. It was known that my employer at times took extreme action at the slightest provocation. Sometimes his actions appeared very harsh. In a state of anxiety I lost the track of spiritual truth and began to think from a material basis. I accepted the harsh suggestions about him and was quickly filled with fear of losing my job. Then when I applied for leave, my employer refused it and terminated my services.
