In God's service

From the October 1996 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Employed by God. Think of it! You and I called of God to fulfill His purpose. Each of us under divine orders, working and progressing in the strength, wisdom, and harmony of infinite Principle. This is true regarding our employment in any wholesome and beneficent endeavor. It's certainly true when we've been elected to the office of Reader in a Christian Science church.

The position may not be one of choice, and we may have reservations. Do I have the time? Do I have the understanding and experience to fulfill the continuing responsibilities of a Reader? Should I withdraw my name from the ballot or put down resistance to this forward step and prove my willingness to work in God's service?

What makes us hesitate? Granted, the belief that we lack time, dedication, or ability may seem to be a valid excuse; but do such claims absolve us from our responsibility to overcome them? The only ability man has is through reflecting the one God, and God gives us what we need to work in His service. We can find encouragement in Christ Jesus' words to his disciples "Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you." John 15:16.
