God's plan and purpose

From the October 1996 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Have you ever gazed at the heavens on a clear night, drinking in the beauty and wonder of the stars, contemplating the infinitude of God's universe? Did you catch the rhythm and order of the cosmos?

Have you pondered the unfolding of a seed as it develops into shrub, plant, or tree? Naturalists and biochemists describe this phenomenon in methodical detail, but often are so absorbed in what they see as a physical process that they fail to grasp the spiritual law underlying such growth.

The burgeoning of a creative idea into a worthwhile, productive enterprise, the transformation of an architectural concept into a house or skyscraper, the conversion of useful observations into a book, the translation of mental melodies into a symphony—all are manifestations in human experience of a marvelous law of God. What is this law? It springs from the glorious fact that the creator of man and the universe is purposeful, and His purpose is wholly good. It is God's law of unfolding purpose. His will and design are manifest in the minutest detail of being. If what appears to be going on does not evidence the harmonious plan of divine Principle, the gracious purpose of divine Love, the wise design of intelligent Mind, it has no validity, and must vanish before an understanding of God's inexorable law.
