"Father, glorify thy name"

Writing to heal

From the October 1996 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Getting out the message of Christianity challenges each new generation of the followers of Christ Jesus. Our works— the living of the message—reach out to those looking for answers. But along with the works come necessary words—words that recount, introduce, explore, expound, explain, and put on record the power of Truth in our lives.

Today when we hear the call "preach the gospel to every creature, " how do we respond? This column offers perspectives from a variety of individuals who have responded by writing. Yet the column isn't so much about writing as it is about the healing activity of making the Word of God known and felt.

My mom had passed on, and I was grieving. Then I remembered that my family had had a wonderful healing after my dad's passing, and that I had sent an article about that experience to the Christian Science periodicals. The Editors had asked for a revision, citing particular points that needed clarification. So I had rewritten the article, using it as a kind of support to let me write my way out of my grief, instead of praying deeply to heal it. I had sent in the revision. Not surprisingly they had sent me back a letter informing me that this article was not developing the way they had hoped, and recommending that I put it aside for the time being.
