St. Petersburg, Russia, rejoins the family

From the October 1996 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In a simple but moving ceremony held on the morning of May 23, the white, blue, and red flag of Russia was unfurled in the Lobby of the Christian Science Publishing House in Boston. This signified the reestablishment of a branch of the Church of Christ, Scientist, in Russia. The new flag and sixty-six others along the balcony represent the worldwide branches of The Mother Church.

Jenny Butterfield, Manager of Branch Church Activities, related how Christian Science church services and healing work began in St. Petersburg as early as 1909. A society was organized in 1924, but was forced by the government to disband in 1929.

"Today's flag raising," she said, "honors a small group of dedicated workers who have in the past six years overcome much opposition to Christian Science church activity, and are now blessed with their own branch."
