FOCUS IV: Strengthening efforts to live for all mankind

Applying "A Rule for Motives and Acts"

From the March 1996 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Over the centuries, there have been sincere searchers for divine Truth who have left written records of their inspiration, which guide many today. Read the book of Psalms, for instance, and you find joy and comfort, wise instruction, profound statements of truth.

Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered Christian Science, wrote inspired books, articles, and poems, providing invaluable spiritual teaching for the benefit not only of her followers but of mankind as a whole. In one of her books there is a wonderful paragraph that is read on the first Sunday of each month in Christian Science churches. This paragraph is perfectly in line with the teachings of Christ Jesus, and it can bring healing to those who ponder it and apply its truth with dedication. It is called "A Rule for Motives and Acts" Manual, Art. VIII, Sect. 1. and is found in the Manual of The Mother Church. This Manual, spiritually inspired, directs all the operations of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, of its officers and of its members.

The paragraph reads: "Neither animosity nor mere personal attachment should impel the motives or acts of the members of The Mother Church. In Science, divine Love alone governs man; and a Christian Scientist reflects the sweet amenities of Love, in rebuking sin, in true brotherliness, charitableness, and forgiveness. The members of this Church should daily watch and pray to be delivered from all evil, from prophesying, judging, condemning, counseling, influencing or being influenced erroneously."
