I was brought up in a loving home, attending a Christian Science Sunday School with my two sisters right up until I was twenty years old. I shall always be grateful to the teachers there, who helped us to appreciate and to love the Holy Bible, with its stories of the prophets and the teachings and healings of Jesus and the apostles. We learned that God is Love, that man is His image, and that we can put our complete trust in God. One of the most helpful things we were taught was the Lord's Prayer, with its spiritual interpretation as given by Mary Baker Eddy in Science and Health.
I have had many healings through Christian Science, but one that impressed me very much occurred six years ago. I noticed a lump on my body, and I was fearful. A sentence that had always helped me came to mind: "God is the creator of man, and, the divine Principle of man remaining perfect, the divine idea or reflection, man, remains perfect" (Science and Health, p. 470). It was a great help for me to ponder these words of truth. I also decided to ask a Christian Science practitioner to help me.
Her affirmations of my spiritual identity were most reassuring. I also knew that I must pray myself, to understand more clearly the spiritual fact that God had made me perfect, in His likeness, and that He maintains the perfection of His creation. God's love for man is constant, and man's perfection is therefore constant. In my prayer, I endeavoured to widen my vision to recognize everyone, in all parts of the world, as children of God, each one cared for and loved by God. The practitioner and I often spoke on the telephone during this time, and she was always full of encouragement. By consistently listening to God, and drawing closer to Him, I became so filled with a conviction of the enduring harmony of Life, that all my lurking fears and doubts were swept away.
