Our family has had numerous healings through the realization of God's loving care, which is a kind of prayer. I have become increasingly aware of just how much overcoming fear helps to bring healing. In the spring of 1990 I learned the importance of centering thought on God persistently and refusing to be frozen into inertia by fearful thinking.
One evening I suddenly lost all sight in one eye. I called a Christian Science practitioner, who began praying immediately. My vision returned for a while, but the next day I again could not see in the eye. At the time I was Second Reader in my church, and was grateful to be able to read adequately with the other eye; the problem was not evident to others. I could also teach my classes at school, but had difficulty seeing what the students were writing on the board.
Frequently I called the practitioner for help. I was healed of discomfort the first day, but I felt very fearful because my vision did not improve. During that week our daughter (who had no idea of the problem) sent us an inspiring letter, sharing a testimony of restored eyesight she had heard in church. It helped greatly in calming and uplifting my thought. However, after about a week and a half I was having such difficulty that I decided to see an optometrist. He told me that I had a detached retina, and said it required surgery.
