Show an eager group of students what a bountiful harvest looks like, give them lots of seeds, turn them loose on a plot of land, and what's likely to happen? Planting. And plenty of it! At least that's what one teacher assumed when teaching gardening to a class of elementary school students.
He was right. We didn't need any coaxing. I was one of those students then, and each of us, having seen the possibilities, looked forward to planting the seeds that would grow to become carrots and radishes. Although it was never the intention of this bunch of enthusiastic gardeners to do so, we were soon going to prove the truth of Paul's words in the Bible "He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully." II Cor. 9:6. In our case, the sowing was bountiful.
Day after day we watched with anticipation for even a hint of growth. Sure enough, the time arrived when we started seeing new sprouts here and there. Eventually, the plot of land all of us had been so carefully watching and cultivating was covered in greenery. Finally, harvest day arrived. And what a harvest! One student even talked about eating for the first time in his life (and probably the last) a whole meal of carrots and radishes!
