Do you recall the old saying "A chain is no stronger than its weakest link"? For the most part, that's a pretty sound observation. It would seem, for example, that what holds an organization together is an invisible bond susceptible to breakage when one individual fails to uphold his responsibility to the others. But what of the bond between God and man? Can it be temporarily broken or irrevocably severed? Never!
The bond between God and His perfect creation is a wholly spiritual one. In the relationship between God and man—divine Mind and its complete, spiritual expression—there is no element of impermanence. And it is as impossible for a divine idea to be separated from its divine source, even temporarily, as for an individual integer to break away from the principle of mathematics or for a note to drop out of its appropriate place in the musical scale.
In spite of sensuous, physical testimony to the contrary, man's real identity—the true selfhood of each of us—has been forever at one with God. Christ Jesus, the Way-shower, embodied and demonstrated this true selfhood better than any other individual in history. And today, the Christ Science is at work in human experience, revealing to mankind the unbreakable spiritual tie that exists between God and man. In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy writes, "The real man being linked by Science to his Maker, mortals need only turn from sin and lose sight of mortal selfhood to find Christ, the real man and his relation to God, and to recognize the divine sonship." Science and Health, p. 316.
