A universe of opportunity

From the January 1998 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I recently visited an aquarium that showed me the many life forms that live at the ocean's bottom in a kelp forest. There is an amazing array of colors in this underwater rain forest, yet none of this is visible from the water's surface. Looking at it from the surface, one sees a bunch of boring, brown leaves, tossed back and forth by the waves. This contrast of perspectives reminded me of how a spiritual outlook on the universe and man enriches our sense of purpose and opportunity. With a Truth-filled consciousness, we behold the multitudinous ideas that lead us up to new talents and opportunities.

Speaking of the ability of spiritualized thought to perceive God's ever-present good, Mary Baker Eddy writes: "Advancing spiritual steps in the teeming universe of Mind lead on to spiritual spheres and exalted beings. To material sense, this divine universe is dim and distant, gray in the sombre hues of twilight; but anon the veil is lifted, and the scene shifts into light." Science and Health, p. 513.

To begin our day early and with prayer helps bring our thought into rhythm with "advancing spiritual steps." We can affirm as soon as we wake up, "This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it."  Ps. 118:24. Through prayer we are receptive to good. On the basis of divine Mind's government of its creation, we reject fear, self-condemnation, envy, disease. We listen for and hear Mind's effective solutions. To make time consistently for quiet study of the Bible and Science and Health is to become more conscious of the "teeming universe of Mind," overflowing with creative ideas and intelligent directions.
