Connecting to the Bible

From the November 1999 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Two Thousand Two Hundred Twelve As of December 31,1998, according to the American Bible Society library . and counting—that's the number of languages and dialects the Bible has been translated into. But perhaps the most significant one is the translation of the Bible into language of the heart, where its message goes beyond words, breaks barriers, lifts hope, and heals. The number of times this kind of translation takes place, when someone opens the Scriptures for answers and finds them, must be many more than 2,212 in a single hour of any day.

This Bible connection is accessible to everyone. Openness to being moved by God's Word makes the link. Humanity's right to grasp the full power of the Scriptural message was a deep concern of the founder of this magazine. The Bible's place in her own life is clear. In her book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, she calls the Bible "... her sole teacher ..." the chart of life . . ." "... my only textbook," "... my only authority." See Science and Health, pp. viii. 24, 110, 126. She encourages readers to reach for the spiritual interpretation of Scripture, to hear the new tongue, See Mark 16:32 and to seek out the Bible's "original language." "The divine Science taught in the original language of the Bible came through inspiration, and needs inspiration to be understood." 4

Exploration of the spiritual meaning of the Bible is something the Journal seeks to foster each month of the year. But to honor the celebration in November of National Bible Week in the United States, the Journal highlights several pieces that illustrate how individuals have found inspiration and healing through searching the Scriptures.
