The close of a century and the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States are sufficient reasons to record and be grateful for signs of progress—and to consider progress in its deepest meaning. The founder of the Journal, Mary Baker Eddy, once observed, "Every step of progress is a step more spiritual" (The People's Idea of God, p. 1). This month's issue helps illustrate why this is so—why a growing understanding of and faithfulness to the one God, and the humble living of His pure qualities, are at the heart of real advancement.
Articles in this issue discuss the basis for forward movement in government, in relations between individuals and nations, and in our own lives. They also shed light on what promotes spiritual healing and what would hinder it. And this issue offers two insightful perspectives on humanity's progress over the last century.
There is much to be thankful for at this period, even as we become more aware of the immense work ahead of us for the advancement and well-being of all. The Journal continues to support that spiritual transformation of thought so essential to our individual and collective progress.
