I can never be grateful enough for Christian Science. I was five years old when my single-parent mother learned about it and took me to Sunday School. We didn't have much in the way of worldly goods, but despite the Depression years, Mother always found a way to provide for us. I never had a feeling of deprivation, because my mother's sense of God's care and abundance was so much a part of our home. She knew that it was God's power and presence that provided for us and met all our needs.
I married a man who was also a Christian Scientist, and it was rare that our children were anything but healthy and happy. What problems they did have were promptly solved through prayer. We found the same abundance in our family that I had experienced in my childhood. I am so grateful that this is what the study and practice of Christian Science bring to one's life.
At a recent Wednesday evening testimony meeting, I felt impelled to share a healing that had taken place over forty years ago when our oldest daughter was only eighteen months old. Her older brother had been quickly healed of what appeared to be whooping cough through Christian Science treatment. But when this little one began coughing, she could not retain any food. Naturally we were very concerned about her. My husband, who was away with his Army duties, prayed to know that we were always in God's care. He also knew that I had asked a Christian Science practitioner for treatment. However, I became very fearful. My prayers seemed ineffective. I was in constant communication by telephone with this loving and patient practitioner. I'll never forget the calm, firm, reassuring voice that strengthened me to trust our daughter to God's care. She reminded me that God, not I, created my daughter, and pointed out that God would never neglect or let go of even one of His children. The practitioner helped me see that the child was God's responsibility, and she assured me that she would continue the treatment.
