Invocation at a council meeting

From the February 1999 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Recently in my prayers for the community, these words from the Bible came to me: "Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it?" Isa. 43:19. To me, this promise from God generates spiritual awareness and brings renewal to the present moment. Life radiates freshness!

It was not surprising to me, then, that shortly after I gleaned this inspiration, a letter came from the Mayor, asking me to give an invocation for the city council at several of its meetings. To my knowledge, this was the first time a Christian Scientist had been invited to do this. Here was an opportunity to introduce our pastor —the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy—to the city council. I selected passages on the subject of "government" to read at my first meeting.

When the Mayor introduced me as a representative from the Church of Christ, Scientist, the council members stood, and remained standing during the readings, and the other citizens who were there listened attentively as well. Later, the Mayor's secretary graciously accepted two dozen copies of the current week's Christian Science Sentinel to give to the Mayor and his staff.
