The deeper significance of the buildings

From the February 1999 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A series of reports, comments, and reflections on the Restoration and Renewal Program at The Mother Church.

At the time the Extension of The Mother Church was being built, Christian Scientists realized that people were wondering about the deeper significance of their new building. In a greeting to Mary Baker Eddy from the Annual Meeting of 1905, they wrote, "As the stately structure grows, and stone is laid upon stone, those who pass by are impelled to ask, What means this edifice? and they learn that the truth which Christ Jesus revealed—the truth which makes free—is to-day being proven and is ready to heal all who accept its divine ministry." The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, pp. 23-24

Today, in close proximity to the Original Edifice of The Mother Church and the Extension are the Christian Science Publishing House, the Sunday School, Church Colonnade, and Administration buildings, a reflecting pool and fountain, and a plaza area enjoyed by many in the city of Boston. In addition to its immediate neighbors, The Mother Church attracts more than 250,000 visitors each year, who tour the Publishing House, the Church, or both. Whether neighbor or long-distance traveler, each one has the opportunity to ask: "What do these buildings mean? What do they stand for?"
