What Should We be planning for? Christ Jesus promised, "If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death." John 8:51. Christians take this promise seriously, and yet conventional wisdom tells us we must plan for our eventual demise. Is it consistent to follow Jesus' teachings, learning more and more of the eternality of life, and yet view our experience in such a limited way?
This issue came into focus when a friend and I were discussing insurance. In response to my question "Do you carry life insurance?" he replied simply, "I'm not planning to die, but if I were, I might consider it." A common response to his statement might be, "But everyone dies, and we have to plan for that!" He went on to say that he had adequately provided for his family. So he wasn't arguing against insurance. That wasn't the issue. But he was definitely arguing for life. He pointed out Jesus' promise quoted above. Certainly the Master had proved his dominion over death, so this was not an empty promise.
My friend was arguing for life, for dominion.
