Recovery after fall from ladder

From the November 2000 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The first part of this experience started with me at the top of a twenty-foot extension ladder and ended with me flat on my back on the frozen ground. I was not able to move because of the severe pain, but over the next hour and a half my wife and a friend were able eventually to get me into bed. This friend is also a Christian Scientist, and she and my wife were sharing many spiritual truths with me during this time. I, too, was doing a lot of praying, trying to realize that I was a perfect spiritual idea of the one Mind, God, and had therefore never suffered an accident or injury. During this time I struggled to remain conscious, but my wife and our friend never lost their positive, cheerful, confident demeanor.

My wife called a Christian Science practitioner, who talked with me by telephone several times that day and evening. His conversations were such a comfort and inspiration, and I was slowly feeling more and more sure that my true life is spiritual. On the third day, I could think a little more clearly, but the focus of my thoughts remained on trying to fix a beat-up body. Previously, it had become quite clear to me, listening to others describe their healings, that healings took place when the person felt God's presence and accepted the truth of God's allness. To me, the key was felt. It is very easy to verbalize truth. It is even easy to believe truth. Feeling it, though, was for me the elusive element at that moment.

The practitioner told me to be joyful in watching God work.
