Stand on what you know

God's law is the authority and power behind spiritual healing.

From the November 2000 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A growth started developing on my arm, and for several weeks it continued to enlarge. I became frightened, and realized that I needed to pray about this. I prayed to understand that what my eyes told me was on my arm was not a part of my spiritual identity as a loved child of God. But the growth continued to enlarge.

Then my husband and I enjoyed a quiet few days away at a mountain spot. While there, I got to thinking about a healing I had had many years earlier. There had been a growth on my knee, which had been there for several years and hadn't bothered me. Skirts had gotten shorter and people had started noticing it, however, often mistakenly telling me I had a hole in my stocking. I got tired of the comments and decided to pray for healing. The major focus of my prayer, and the living of that prayer, was that the only true growth is spiritual. The trouble began to melt away, and before long it was entirely gone. I saw clearly that this physical healing was the result of consecrated prayer. I was so thankful for seeing, and proving, the power of God to guide my thoughts in the right direction for healing.

When I got to remembering this earlier experience, a current expression flashed through my mind: "Been there! Done that!" While this wasn't a profound metaphysical statement, I realized in that moment that I had already proved the spiritual law that applied to this present situation. I had already understood something about spiritual growth and the power of God's law of health. This law had governed in the healing of the former case, and I knew it governed in the current one, too. I felt I could stand firmly on the spiritual truths I had already proved. Over the next several days the growth began to diminish, and several weeks later that area of my arm was completely smooth.
