AS THE SON OF A MINISTER, raised in a Christian family, I often found myself falling short of achieving perfection in my habits and actions. God seemed very far off. When I began to study Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy's explanation of the true nature of God and His creation opened a wholly new view of myself and my fellow beings, and my life took on new focus and direction. This spiritual journey began about twenty-five years ago when I met my wife-to-be, a devout Christian Scientist.
I can sustain hours of strenous work, without any pain.
About ten years ago I was suffering from periodic chest pains whenever I was involved in any extended physical exertion. I soon realized that I needed spiritual help, so I contacted a Christian Science practitioner. We prayed together for about six months. He always steered my thought toward the truths presented in the weekly Bible Lesson (found in the Christian Science Quarterly), and helped me not to see myself as a mortal, material person. Since my father had passed away with heart failure at about my age, the fear was that history would repeat itself. I was learning that I did not have to accept that false verdict. Although I didn't see discernible improvement in the heart condition during this time, I gained enormously in understanding my true existence as the perfect child of God.
