"Exceeding great Joy"

From the December 2000 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Every year, beginning right after Thanksgiving, I make a special effort to find a fresh view of what Christmas reveals about God. And each year, one sentence or phrase from the Bible or the writings of Mary Baker Eddy has taken on new meaning for me. It has brought me not only happiness during the holiday season, but healing as well.

Two years ago, the phrase that leapt out to me was "exceeding great joy." It's found in the Biblical account of the wise men traveling to see the baby Jesus. The full text reads, "When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy."  Matt. 2:10. I wished that everyone could have that bursting feeling of joy! Then I realized that there was a recipe for joy—"when they saw the star." To me, that star symbolized the revelation of Christ, showing that God, Spirit, is the only cause, creating good alone. Could it have been this revelation that inspired the wise men's great joy?

How thrilling to realize that Christ continuously guides to tangible evidence that Spirit alone is the creator, causing only good. Mary Baker Eddy writes: "In different ages the divine idea assumes different forms, according to humanity's needs. In this age it assumes, more intelligently than ever before, the form of Christian healing. This is the babe we are to cherish." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 370. Just as the star of Bethlehem led the wise men to Jesus some 2,000 years ago, so the great fact that God is the only cause leads each of us today to scientific Christian healing. This healing comes naturally as we keep our eye on the star—keep our thoughts on spiritual truth.
