When I was in high school, my parents were told by the school counselors that I had a very low IQ. They said I didn't have the intelligence to finish high school. Up to that point I had failed most of my classes. I had thought of myself as stupid and unable to learn; after all, everyone told me I was stupid, and I believed them.
My aunt, who was a Christian Scientist, pointed out to me one day that I should study and memorize what Mary Baker Eddy says about intelligence in the Glossary of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. She defines intelligence as, "Substance; self-existent and eternal Mind; that which is never unconscious nor limited." Science and Health, p. 588. Through my aunt's prayer and my study of this definition, I began to see myself in a new light. I was beginning to see that as a child of God, I had unlimited intelligence because it came from God.
My grades in my last two years of high school showed a marked improvement. However, I was unable to gain admission into any colleges at that point in my life.
