FEARLESS

The Lord set me in a large place

In a cramped airplane, a woman prays, and feels God's presence and infinite goodness.

From the March 2000 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A Large Place, a small place. Do you feel more comfortable in one than the other? Being in close, confined surroundings causes some people to be afraid. Is there a way to find freedom from what is called claustrophobia?

Yes there is. If fear threatens to overwhelm us, the calm certainty of God's presence can deliver us. Turning our thought to Him, we find peace and liberation from debilitating fear. Right ideas emanating from God — His comforting angels — are always with us to meet our every need. In the words of the ninety-first Psalm: "He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways." Ps. 91:11.

Some time ago, my husband and I found ourselves on an airplane in the most cramped seating arrangement we'd ever experienced. We actually felt that the backs of our seats were leaning us forward. And the seats in front of ours seemed almost in our laps. Then, after the plane had taken off, a passenger directly in front of us put her seat into a reclining position. The feeling of being confined was intense. I was reaching forward to ask the reclining passenger if she might consider putting her seat back in the upright position, when my husband, realizing my intent, stopped me. He reassuringly took my hand and said, "No, you can do this!"
