Opening the prison doors

From the May 2000 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I Have Served for some years in the activity of prison ministry, supported by my local Church of Christ, Scientist. Some time ago we began to investigate the idea of sponsoring a lecture at a maximum-security prison. The senior chaplain at the prison was open to the idea, but I felt he was perhaps concerned that all our efforts might result in a very small attendance. As the plans began to develop, I made sure the chaplain was kept updated, and I asked him for input as to how to go about bringing the idea to fruition. The men whom I have been visiting and working with at the prison joined in with enthusiastic support.

The chaplain graciously offered his inmate choir to open and close the meeting. His staff was instructed to set up a platform, sound system, and table for the lecturer. And he assured me he would do all he could to see that everyone knew about the lecture. His loudspeaker announcements would be heard in all the buildings.

All told, one hundred and six men from the prison came to the talk.
