Prayer and the church service*

From the May 2000 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In church one Sunday morning, the Scriptural reading inspired me to include in my prayer the truth that God was the intelligence of the congregation; therefore, everyone knew what he or she needed to know. When I finished, the thought came, "You left the stove on!" Slipping out quietly, I drove home and arrived in time to prevent disaster. Then I returned to the church service.

How valuable a congregation
that Love provides for
its specific care.
How blessed the participation!
We help ourselves
embracing the collective in prayer.

* "The prayers in Christian Science churches shall be offered for the congregations collectively and exclusively" (Manual of The Mother Church, Art. VIII, Sect. 5).
