LIFE DIRECTION

Stay on the path to the "big top"!

How do we avoid being distracted from the "main event"—spiritually understanding God?

From the May 2000 issue of The Christian Science Journal

There is a divine purpose underlying the life of each and every individual. There is also divine support guiding each one of us to the accomplishment of our highest potential—the recognition and demonstration of our God-given individuality and purpose. We all have the capability of staying focused on this destination through prayer and alertness. But sometimes "detours" would steer us off track. How can we avoid these? Here are some ideas that have helped me.

Have you ever been to an honest-to-goodness, old-fashioned circus? I mean the kind with a huge "big top," the tent where you can see trained elephants, trapeze artist, lion tamers, clowns, and jugglers. I vividly remember the thrill of entering this world of color, excitement, magic, and amazement as a small boy. I would sit with my family in the bleachers, transfixed by the astounding feats being performed. Defiance of danger, precision, displays of incredible strength, seemingly impossible stunts, mixed with the lighthearted humor and skill of the clowns—all of these and more were waiting for you. That is, if you went into the big top.

Astounding feats awaited you in the main tent of the circus.
