I'VE HAD MANY BLESSINGS from the application of Christian Science. These include healings of illness, acute pain, relationship difficulties, protection in an automobile accident, and challenges overcome in meeting college requirements; also, guidance in finding appropriate employment and healings involving pets.
More recently I had an experience that taught me more about denying the belief that we have a mortal selfhood and affirming that man is the image and likeness of God. I had been praying for quite some time about certain challenges, and in doing so I happened upon a statement of Mary Baker Eddy's in her book Miscellaneous Writings. It reads as follows: "Self-renunciation of all that constitutes a so-called material man, and the acknowledgment and achievement of his spiritual identity as the child of God, is Science that opens the very flood-gates of heaven; whencegood flows into every avenue of being, cleansing mortals of all uncleanness, destroying all suffering, and demonstrating the true image and likeness" (p. 185). I had read this statement before, but this time it really made an impression. It seemed to wipe out, through the truth of man it points to, anything that would pose as a false, material label on man's identity. I found myself referring to this statement often.
No physical manipulation was needed to bring me comfort.
