Love on the offensive

We are immune to anger— and so is everybody else!

From the January 2001 issue of The Christian Science Journal

During the first stages of construction of our new house, which I had designed and for which I was acting as the building contractor, I was repeatedly insulted and threatened by one of the foremen doing the concrete work. He was loud, belligerent, and constantly complained that some of the things required in the specifications were unnecessary and ridiculous, not the way he was used to doing things.

When I pointed out to him where a buried water line was located, so that he or his crew wouldn't inadvertently drive a stake through it, he replied: "We sometimes drive stakes in water lines on purpose. By the time we get through with this job you are really going to hate me!"

But even as he was speaking, I was praying. It was as if he were a child wearing a Halloween mask and trying to frighten me. I remained calm and didn't react. I felt God's Love all around me.
