Positioning Joseph

From the January 2001 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Selected, sold
out of his land: "Whose feet they hurt
with fetters:
he was laid
in iron.

He was celled
with king's personnel.
And to Pharaoh's: I have a dream—
there is none to interpret it —

He said: "Do not interpretations
belong to God?

He was acknowledged
and positioned —

Second in the kingdom
second only to the king,

Able to mandate
provident steps: The gathering of corn
"as the sand of the sea . . .
until he left numbering;
for it was without number."

In time,
his actions shepherded

The shepherding Hebrews
into Egypt

Part of the larger plan
of a foreknowing Father —

The divine hand
forever stretched out.
