How can the Bible have a role in defining moral life in today's culturally diverse environment? Even among those whose background is rooted in Biblical tradition, there are many perspectives on its meaning and application. Also, it can be argued that the Bible was written in cultural times quite different from our own. Does citing the Bible simply open the door to endless controversy?
So it would seem, as long as the discussion remains within the realm of human opinion. But there is an alternative, to which the Bible points consistently. The Psalmist refers to God's words as light that directs us on our way. See Psalm 199:130 . And Isaiah promises, "Thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left." Isaiah 30:21. As in Bible times, so today, God speaks directly to His children and inspires them to understand Him. When Scripture is read with a deep, humble, listening spirit, God speaks directly to the heart of the reader. This inspired Word straight from God is a source of direction in every area of experience. And It's available to everyone.
We discern God's Word not so much with our eyes or ears as with our spiritual sense. God gives this capacity for understanding, this spiritual sense, to each of His children. It's a mark of His love. It was spiritual sense that gave rise to the timeless insights about God and the universe in the pages of the Bible. It was spiritual sense that gave rise to similar insights in the sacred writings of other religions of the world.
