Even the 'gloom and doom' stories have a point

From the November 2001 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Some Time Ago, I committed myself to reading the Bible through. At first, I felt a lot of resistance to doing it. There seemed to be a lot of gloom and doom in some of the passages.

I had just gone through some gloomy experiences of my own: the passing of two family members, losing my job, feeling isolated in my move back home, and a stormy relationship with a relative. So I wasn't inspired to continue reading, and I put the Bible aside for a while.

About a month later, I picked it up again. This time, however, I humbly prayed for guidance. I had a sincere desire to gain the spiritual inspiration of the messages rather than just their literal meaning.
