A letter from prison

From the October 2002 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Most people don't realize that it's easy to get involved with drugs, but it's really hard to get away from them. I first started drinking alcohol when I was about 15. I took the first drink mostly due to peer pressure; all the older kids were doing it. I just wanted to fit in.

Once you take that first step, the other drugs become an easier choice. I was like, "Hey, I really like alcohol. I bet these pills will make me feel even better." As I got older, I just kept experimenting with anything and everything. I have tried everything from cocaine to ecstasy, but my drug of choice has always been alcohol, although most times I would also mix it with pills such as Valium® or Xanax®.

I found out that when I was drinking and taking drugs, I could fit in anywhere, talk to anybody—and it seemed like I always had friends. Ha! The joke was on me, because here I am in prison going through the biggest ordeal of my life, and how many of those "friends" are around now?
