Tips to keep kids off drugs

From the October 2002 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The world may seem full of temptations, but the facts show that a loving, interested family can be a major defense aganist drug use. Here are some tips for parents and other adults, gleaned from the World Wide Web. Certain Web sites might state these tips in different ways, but these six showed up most often.

1. Be a good example — don't use drugs, if you don't want your child using drugs.

2. Listen without condemning; maintain open communication and don't preach.

3. Know your child's friends and their parents. Call friend's parents if their home is going to be used for a party.

4. Make rules, such as setting curfews; be firm that drug use is against the rules.

5. Eat dinner together.

6. Don't make one formal "lecture" about not using drugs — rather, keep the discussion natural and bring up the subject at different times when the occasion seems appropriate.
