From drugs in Haight-Ashbury to genuine love—my spiritual path

From the October 2002 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When I was stationed in Korea, the people I hung around with in the Air Force were smoking a lot of marijuana. After I returned to the States, I didn't do drugs until about 1965, when I was in southern California.

At that time I was spending a lot of my free time in the Haight-Ashbury area of San Francisco. This section of town was very drug oriented, and most of the distribution was through friends. Somebody always knew someone who had a stash. It was a cozy sort of thing.

They just didn't want me to harm myself.
