From the time I was about three years old and all through my high-school years, I suffered from frequent sore throats and colds that led to chronic infectious bronchial asthma. This and other serious illnesses forced me to spend weeks in bed several times a year. Our family doctor made numerous house calls and did what he could to help me. My tonsils and adenoids were removed, but my health didn't improve.
When I was a high-school senior, I began dating a girl who was a Christian Scientist. I knew very little about this religion, and wanted to find out more. Her mother gave me a copy of Science and Health and said I would find answers to my questions in it. I began studying the book and went several times with my friend to the Christian Science Sunday School. I found the ideas in Science and Health very thought-provoking. I'd recently developed an interest in chemistry as well, so I was especially intrigued by the scientific proofs of Christian Science healing.
After graduating from high school, I enrolled in a nearby university, hoping I'd remain well enough to stay in school. Early in my freshman year I became ill with a sore throat, which was followed by a severe attack of asthma. I went to the university infirmary for treatment. When I had a severe reaction to a medication they prescribed for me, my parents were notified. I spent over a week in the infirmary and some time at home recovering as well. When I returned to school, I had to get a special exemption from the required physical education courses.
