The 'Golden Rule' of conduct

To treat others as you would like to be treated smooths out the bumps of life.

From the October 2002 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A friend of mine was asked to act as moderator at a meeting between local residents and the city council. The meeting threatened to be rancorous and the council members feared that they would be exposed to an angry mob. As a local resident with strong feelings about the issues, my friend wondered if he could remain impartical in this highly volatile situation.

Could my friend remain impartial in this volatile situation?

It was at this point that the Golden Rule provided some helpful guidance. Although this rule has roots in many traditions, I love the way Matthew's Gospel, in the New Testament, articulates Jesus' teaching on the subject: "All things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them." Matt. 7:12
