'Now You take care of me!'

From the June 2003 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I was a clown. I danced in variety theatres, music halls, and at the circus. My adoptive mother had started me on this track because she thought it was the best thing for me. She didn't think I had what it took to pursue an intellectual career. I can't say I liked this activity, first of all because I was extremely shy and fearful. And I had a handicap: I stuttered. Thankfully this problem was not noticeable when I sang!

My adoptive parents were not religious, and I did not know God. Once I asked my adoptive mother:

"Who is the good God?"
"He's our creator," she said.
"But why do we say good God?"
"Because He's good, only good."
