Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures entered my life via my mother. One of my aunts had given her the book. I started reading it and was struck by its teachings.
I had suffered with nervous depression for many years, and the only thing that comforted me was reading books on metaphysics. When I began to read Science and Health, I found it to be completely different from other books I'd read. Its author, Mary Baker Eddy, is very clear. She says we ourselves can prove this book's teachings.
I had thought it illogical for the healings that were possible in the time of Jesus and of the first Christians to have become impossible nowadays. And when I read Science and Health, I realized that spiritual healing is indeed possible today. I was very moved, in particular, by the portion of the book titled Key to the Scriptures, where Mrs. Eddy gives a spiritual interpretation of certain elements of the books of Genesis and Revelation. The most fundamental discovery I made in this key was in its discussion of the difference between the two accounts of creation in Genesis. Mrs. Eddy emphasizes that these accounts are not complementary, but contradictory.
