A good feeling

From the January 2004 issue of The Christian Science Journal

My SON WAS a happy ten-year-old boy. But at one point I began to notice that his mood was changing. He was becoming cranky and uptight. He had also been hanging around some older boys in the neighborhood who encouraged him to participate in some questionable activities. And, sadly, he was no longer interested in playing with his best friend.

I wanted to do something, but I didn't want to single out the older boys as being "bad," or as being an unhealthy influence on my son. In my heart I knew that all God's children were good and could express only good.

Then one morning, Jason woke up feeling ill. A number of the neighboring kids were coming down with chicken pox, and his symptoms were similar. So I informed the school and kept Jason quarantined, in compliance with the legal requirements in California at that time. And, as I always did when my children's well-being was at stake, I also phoned a Christian Science practitioner for Christian Science treatment. I told her that Jason was feeling uncomfortable, and she began to pray immediately. She mentally asserted Jason's God-given immunity from disease, based on a foundational idea from Science and Health: God is Love and doesn't send disease for any reason. And, everybody is actually spiritual, and not influenced by physical conditions such as disease. She also gave Jason and me an "assignment" to work on together.
