In October 2002, while working as an interim manager for an apartment complex, I stacked some unused items in our garage in preparation for a pickup by a local charity. When the pickup day arrived, I helped the driver by moving things out into the driveway so he could get to them easily.
We had just about finished, when I noticed another large carton that was to be included in the load. I decided to take it out to him before he left. This carton was stacked on top of several other items, and in front of them three eight-foot doors were lying on their sides, leaning against the entire stack. As I picked it up, I realized the box was much heavier than I had imagined, and it fell from my hands, landing on the top edges of the three doors, which in turn fell forward toward me, knocking me off of my feet. I scooted backward as the doors were falling, but I was unable to move both feet out of the way before the doors, box, and all fell on me. The entire weight of all of these items landed on the toes of one foot, sending waves of pain through my foot. Because the items were so heavy, I couldn't move out from under them, so I cried out for the driver to help me. He quickly lifted the box and doors off my foot and helped me stand up, and then he led me to a nearby chair.
The driver was noticeably concerned about the injury to my foot, but I quickly turned to God in prayer, pleading with Him to tell me what I needed to know. Immediately I remembered a Bible verse I'd been reading that week: "This shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put mylaw in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people" (Jer. 31:33). To me, this verse was God's guarantee that my indestructible perfection was a divine law. I clung to this thought, even though the pain was severe. I can truly say I felt the healing begin the minute I took a stand to trust in that law. I quickly became calm, and felt safe in God's care.
