A forum for discussion, prayer, and self-discovery

From the October 2004 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Ask Tyler Maltbie what comes to mind when he thinks of Sunday School, and he will tell you, "the word discussion."

"I really enjoy the talks that my class has," says Tyler. "We work out each others' problems. Katie, our teacher, lets us talk about issues in our lives. Then, as a class, we help each other use Christian Science to better the problem. The big thing that I've been learning in Sunday School is that there is no problem too big, small, or strange that God cannot resolve. It sounds very basic, but I really didn't realize that until fairly recently. I can pray about anything, and that's a great thing to know."

Katie Martin, Tyler's teacher, who heads the class of high school and college students at the Sunday School in Newburyport, Massachusetts, strives "to make the class a forum for honest and open discussion where anything that's on their minds is fair game for discussion, and everything we discuss as a class remains in the class. We support each other in prayer, and all the kids have a nice, cooperative relationship with each other. This has created a wonderful environment for group discussions, where I'm a facilitator more than the 'teacher.' "
